How to Study Mathematics Effectively
Mathematics is not a subject you read — it is a subject you do. The single biggest mistake struggling students make is passively re-reading notes or watching solutions without attempting problems themselves.
1. Solve Before You Look
Attempt every problem before checking the solution. The struggle itself is what builds mathematical muscle. If you are stuck for more than ten minutes, look at only the first step of the solution, then try again.
2. Use Spaced Repetition
Revisit each topic three times: two days after learning it, one week later, and one month later. This schedule beats cramming by a wide margin in retention studies.
3. Drill Past Papers Under Time Pressure
In your final month before an exam, switch entirely to timed past papers. Mark them honestly and keep an error log — most students repeat the same three or four mistake types.
4. Get Targeted Help Early
Gaps in mathematics compound. If algebra is shaky, calculus will collapse. A few sessions with a mathematics tutor to repair specific gaps is far more effective than generic extra lessons.
